Digital Asset Management: An Emerging
Technical Evolution
Digital asset management is by definition, “a combination of
workflow, software and hardware which organizes and retrieves a
company’s digital assets” according to the Wikipedia. Its
function is usually focused on managing, searching, ingesting,
and retrieving the assets of an organization or business.
Digital asset management is still an evolving market which has
room to grow to achieve full competency in its field. Also,
considering description that it is involved in the definition
of digital asset management, this is seen to cover a vast
multitude of problems under different sets of standards.
The Different Types of Digital Asset Management Available
Today
Based on their function, the digital asset management (DAM) is
divided into the following three major categories:
1. The DAM which concentrates upon facilitation of the asset
within a company is called, ‘brand asset management
system’
2. The DAM that looks at the storage and
retrieval of infrequently or frequently changing data
(media assets) is called, ‘Library asset management
system’
3. The DAM which covers almost all aspects of an
organization, such as storage, revision control, and
organization of the frequently/ infrequently changing
media assets is called, ‘Production asset management
system.’
What Is a Digital Asset Management System?
The digital asset management system is actually a modern tool
which is used specifically for the organization and management
of media assets with particular emphasis on storage and
retrieval. In order to have a DAM best suited to your business,
you need to find out what exactly you need to know and manage.
This is the first step to finding the most appropriate system
for your business. Do you need to only be able to search your
media data? Do you need to organize collaborative settings? Do
you need to rather manage and be informed about the rights and
permission?
There are many types of DAM available for you; among whom the
desktop DAM is the easiest to use and manage. This type is
ideal for a small to medium size businesses which can work with
a low security sharing of files. The main disadvantage of this
type however, is that the desktop DAM will only show references
to the existing files and not the files themselves. This could
be a major disadvantage for some organizations.
Other types of DAM are, collaborative focused solutions,
process oriented solutions, industry focused solutions, and
merchant focused solution and so on. Each of the DAM will be
able to give you the right combination of solutions for your
optimal digital asset management.
